Lowe's Shutters 'Underperforming' Chelsea Store

The home improvement giant is closing 20 of its worst performing stores in the country.

CHELSEA, NY — Home improvement retailer Lowe's is ditching Chelsea due to poor store performance, the company announced Monday.

The Chelsea Lowe's, located on Sixth Avenue and W. 20th Street, is one of 20 stores the retailer is shuttering due to staggering sales.

"While decisions that impact our associates are never easy, the store closures are a necessary step in our strategic reassessment as we focus on building a stronger business," Marvin Ellison, Lowe's president and CEO, said in a statement.

"We believe our people are the foundation of our business and essential to our future growth, and we are making every effort to transition impacted associates to nearby Lowe's stores."

The jumbo-sized stores are expected to close before Feb. 1, 2019, though some stores may close immediately, company officials said.

Lowe's did not specify if the Chelsea location will be closed immediately or if it will offer a closing sale.

The home improvement giant is also closing a store in the Upper West Side. The two Manhattan locations are the only Lowe's stores closing in New York State.

The city's two Brooklyn and two Staten Island locations were spared from the retailer's purge.
