Manhole Explodes Outside Chelsea Market

Firefighters responded to a manhole fire at West 19th Street and 9th Avenue on Thursday afternoon.

CHELSEA, NY -- A manhole cover exploded outside Chelsea Market on Thursday afternoon, triggering fire alarms as it burst into flames, fire officials said.

The manhole fire was first reported at West 15th Street and 9th Avenue in Chelsea just after 2:30 p.m., an FDNY spokesman told Patch.

Twelve FDNY units of 60 firefighters responded to the call, putting the blaze under control by 3:30 p.m., authorities said. No injuries were reported from the incident.
