NYCHA Playground In Chelsea To Get A Makeover

The Elliott-Chelsea Houses, a public housing complex, will get funding to update its grounds.

CHELSEA, NY — The playgrounds and grounds at a public housing complex in Chelsea will be updated and refreshed thanks to an influx of cash approved by neighborhood residents.

The grounds at the Elliott-Chelsea housing complex will get updated playgrounds, renovated walkways and improved gardens via the District 3 participatory budget process, the results of which were announced on Tuesday night. Like many City Council districts, citizens in District 3 get to allot about $1 million on small, community-based projects each year. Council Member Corey Johnson, who represents the area, announced the results of the participatory budgeting process on Tuesday evening. The district spans the West side of Manhattan from Greenwich Village and to parts of the Upper West Side.

The housing complex will get $500,000 to update the grounds, and residents will approve all changes, according to Johnson's office.

New air conditioning will also be funded at a Chelsea elementary school through the participatory budgeting process. P.S. 11, the William T. Harris school, will get $150,000 to install new air conditioning at the school, which is frequently used as a site for summer school. The school, located at 320 W 21st St., is in use year-round, and houses more than 900 students during the school in addition to its summer school sessions.

Other funded projects include screens with real time arrival information for MTA bus stops and a new park on an empty plot of land in Hell's Kitchen. For more news from Chelsea, subscribe to Patch news alerts here.
