Students Caught Bringing Knives Into Chelsea High School: Report

At least 10 students were caught with knives during a random screening this week, according to reports.

CHELSEA, NY — At least 10 students tried to bring knives to school this week, the New York Daily News reported.

The students were caught during a spot screening at the Bayard Rustin Educational Complex in Chelsea, a campus that houses multiple schools on West 18th Street. The students have been suspended, according to the Daily News. The random screening included metal detectors that were brought into the school on Wednesday and picked up on the knives, the Daily News reported, citing police sources. An NYPD spokeswoman was not immediately able to confirm the details of the incident.

Weapons are not permitted in New York City schools.

"Weapons of any kind are not permitted in our schools and these items were swiftly and safely recovered," a Department of Education spokeswoman said in a statement to the Daily News. "The safety of students always comes first and we’ll continue to work closely with the NYPD to ensure students are provided with a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment in all school buildings."
