Tired Of The Chelsea Market's Crowds? So Is Its Owner

Chelsea Market is instituting a new policy for group tours in an attempt to reduce crowds in the shopping space.

CHELSEA, NY — You're not the only one sick of the long lines and crowds at Chelsea Market — the market's owners hate them too. The company that runs the space announced on Monday they'll be reigning in the tour groups who visit the space in an attempt to reduce congestion.

Jamestown, the company that owns Chelsea Market, said in a statement that "in an effort to enhance the experience for locals and visitors, the new policy will reduce the number of large group tours permitted in the Market, thus decreasing congestion and easing access to the shops that serve the local community."

The new policy says that tour groups can only visit the market during non-peak hours between 8:30 and 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m. Jamestown is also increasing security outside the market's main entrance on Ninth Avenue and will require tours to enter through the 10th Avenue entrance.

The new policy is apparently the first of several steps in a multi-year plan to make the market more of a neighborhood-focused space.
