COMMACK, NY — Jon Dignam, of Commack, turned a seasonal tour of the neighborhood Christmas lights into a passion project.

His website liightsmap.com is a databank of holiday-decorated homes.

Dignam's project was created nearly a decade ago because he wanted to find displays to show his family.

"I just remember being annoyed, driving around [thinking] 'Where are these houses?'" Dignam told Patch. "It just took forever to find a house."

He joined Facebook groups as his entries grew, but it didn't go beyond Dignam's computer.

"Maybe I should share this," he pondered. "Maybe I should have a Facebook page for it. It basically became viral overnight."

Now, the website "houses" the locations in map and spreadsheet form for holiday lights across Long Island. So far, more than 500 homes are included in the LI Lights Map.

While dozens of people contact Dignam, he remains the only one who updates the website. Submissions can be made through the website. Also on the site, lists holiday scavenger hunts for children.

Although Dignam has been encouraged to seek sponsors, the website is ad-free.

"It's just a fun thing. I'm not looking to make any money off of it."

If you're wondering, Dignam does have his own holiday display.

"I wish I could say my house is fantastic and it's over the top, but it's not," he laughed. "It looks pretty good. I am on the map,"
