Babylon Hero's Legacy Honored With Street Renaming
The Babylon community paid tribute to local hero Salvatore Giulio Rubino's legacy with a recent street renaming in his honor.
WEST BABYLON, NY — Salvatore Giulio Rubino Memorial was known for his military heroism and dedication to his community, according to the Town of Babylon.
On Monday, March 10, Rubino's legacy was honored when the corner of 4th Street and 12th Avenue in West Babylon was renamed as Salvatore Giulio Rubino Memorial Way.
Community members gathered at the corner for a celebration attended by Rubino's family and friends, Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Terence McSweeney.

According to town officials, Rubino was born in Italy, immigrated to the U.S. in 1966 at just 17 and was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. Rubino died in October 2021.
"He showed immense bravery—surviving a life-threatening chest wound, enduring months of recovery, and completing his full two-year service before becoming a proud U.S. citizen," officials said.

Rubino also dedicated 30 years to his community, worked tirelessly, and never hesitated to help others. He once saved a man from choking after a bicycle accident and performed the Heimlich maneuver on a woman in distress.
"Though his war injuries left him with lifelong complications, his spirit remained unbreakable," officials said. "We lost this remarkable man, but his legacy of selflessness and bravery will live on forever."
