At the first annual Pi Day celebration at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School, students came prepared for a day of fun and friendly competition in the gym during math period. As part of the festivities, each student had the opportunity to select one craft and one contest to participate in, which incorporated several other disciplines including English, music and physical education.

The events included pi trivia, a whipped cream “pi” eating contest, a hula hoop and ring toss contest, and stations for creating pi paper chains and bead key chains. In a unique pi with music activity, students used the digits of pi to assign a note to a number by following the digits of pi, then created songs by placing the notes that correspond with the correct color. One seventh grader won the pi reciting contest, reciting an outstanding 226 digits of pi from memory.

The winners of each contest enjoyed the privilege of pieing a teacher or administrator in the face.

“Pi Day was a huge success,” Director of Mathematics and Business Christine Gill said. “The kids and adults all had a blast and I guarantee they know a lot more about pi than they did before. A big shout out and thank you to all those teachers and administrators who volunteered to get pied in the face. It truly made the day extra special.”
