Firefighters Battle Raging House Fire, 8 Hospitalized On LI: FD
Suffolk police are investigating a house fire on Long Island that hospitalized 1 firefighter and 7 civilians on Saturday, firefighters say.
NORTH BABYLON, NY — The North Babylon Volunteer Fire Company battled a blaze that engulfed a North Babylon home and hospitalized a firefighter and several civilians on Saturday night, firefighters said.
Firefighters said they responded to a house fire at 49 Embargo Place around 7:15 p.m. On their way to the scene, Assistant Chief Mike Elco activated their "full mutual aid plan due to the quantity of calls being taken as well as a column of smoke in the distance" and was on scene in "two minutes and confirmed the working fire."
According to the fire department, "Crews were met with a heavy fire load. Multiple hose lines were stretched and an aggressive attack was made."

Firefighters said "seven civilians and one firefighter were transported to a local hospital for evaluation," and the fire was "under control in about 90 minutes" under the command of Chief Pete Alt.
Mutual aid was provided by Babylon Central Fire Alarm and Rescue Alarm Corp, Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, Wyandanch Volunteer Fire Company Incorporated, Wyandanch Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corp., and West Babylon, Bay Shore Fire, Brentwood, Deer Park, Dix Hills and Lindenhurst fire departments.

Suffolk County Police Arson Section detectives and the Town of Babylon are investigating the cause of the fire.
