Kayak Programs Open to Town Residents
Residents can register for summer programs through Babylon's Parks and Rec Department.
Residents interested in kayaking this summer can register for one of three programs offered through the Town of Babylon.
The three programs in July and August are offered for beginner kayakers, kids and adults. Online registration is available, as well as walk-in registration, which can be done at the Parks and Recreation Office located at 151 Phelps Lane in North Babylon, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Proof of age and residency within the Town of Babylon are required at registration.
The programs are as follows.
Beginner Kayaking focuses on the basics. It begins with a one hour introductory training session, followed by a two hour kayak paddle of the Great South Bay. The training covers paddle strokes, bracing & balance, the “wet exit,” and trip safety procedures. Each participant should bring drinking water, a snack, a nylon wind breaker, a poly pro top, a hat, water shoes, insect repellent and sunscreen. These items should be carried in a sealed plastic bag.
Age: 14 and older
Fee: $50 per person, includes kayak, paddle rental and life jacket.
Dates: Saturday, Aug. 3, Sunday, Aug. 4, Saturday, Aug. 10 and Sunday, Aug. 11
Time: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Children's Kayaking is offered at Tanner Park and Venetian Shores. The program is a two hour, two-day class on the basic stroke and the basic paddling with the safety skills to enjoy the kayaking experience on the water. Lessons are for children 9 to 14 years of age, class size is six children to one instructor. Included in the fee is the rental of kayak, paddles and life jacket.

Fee: $65 per person
Dates: Monday and Wednesday, July 8 & 10 or Tuesday and Thursday, July 9 & 11
Time: 10 a.m. to noon
Adult Kayaking includes a two-hour instructional land and water lesson taught by an experienced instructor. Fee includes all the equipment, the rental of the kayak, life vest and paddles.
Age: 14 and older
Fee: $45 per person
Date: Friday, July 12th
Time: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
