N. Babylon Grad Receives Top Academic Honors

North Babylon resident Gina Mauro recently received the Sledge/Benedict fellowship from the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society.

A member of Dowling College’s Class of 2012, Mauro is a member of Dowling’s Alpha Chi New York Rho Chapter and had a double major in chemistry and mathematics with a grade-point average of 4.0 and 3.97 respectively.

In March, Mauro delivered a presentation at the Alpha Chi National Super Convention in Baltimore focused on her research in chemistry that was performed at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 2011. As a result of her presentation and her academic record, Mauro was awarded the Alpha Chi fellowship.

“Ms. Mauro’s research was presented clearly, concisely, and with great poise,” said Dr. John D. Vargas, Associate Professor of Mathematics and faculty sponsor for Alpha Chi.  “The motto of Alpha Chi is ‘Character and Scholarship.’  Ms. Mauro is a young scholar of unimpeachable character and she is the embodiment of Alpha Chi's motto and is deserving of every possible accolade.  Her double major in chemistry and mathematics is one of the most challenging academic programs that can be pursued by any student.”

"Having students like Ms. Mauro in our classes reminds us what a privilege it is to teach,” said Dr. Susanne Bleiberg Seperson, Department of Sociology Chair at Dowling. “We wish her the best of luck and are confident that she will continue to exemplify excellence reflecting the attributes of Alpha Chi and Dowling College." 

Mauro has been accepted into the graduate mathematics program at the NYU Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, which U.S. News and World Report rated as the top applied mathematics program in the United States.
