Off-Duty LI Police Officer Shot: 1 Reportedly In Custody

DEER PARK, NY — A person of interest in the shooting of an off-duty NYPD officer from Deer Park on Saturday in Brooklyn was taken into custody late Monday, Newsday reported.

The officials said that a 32 year-old man from New York City was taken into custody in Rockland County. Officers then conducted an intense search and study of surveillance images and license plate reader data, according to police, Newsday reported.

The NYPD announced on Monday morning that a $10,000 reward will be given too anyone who can help identify and lead to the arrest of the shooter.

The 26-year-old officer had arranged over social media to buy a car from someone, and went with a relative to meet the person around 7 p.m. Saturday on Ruby Street and Linden Boulevard in Brooklyn, police said.

When they arrived, a person displayed a gun and announced a robbery, leading to an exchange of gunfire that left the officer injured, according to police. The suspect fled and the officer was taken to Brookdale University Hospital, police said.

At a press conference on Sunday, Mayor Eric Adams said he spoke with the officer's wife and their children the hospital, hearing an unfortunate sound of "tell me it's not true," he said.

"We will catch the person responsible for this act," he said. "My heart goes out to the family, and the members of the department in general, specifically to the members of his command."

Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell stated that the officer is "fighting for his life" and remains in critical condition.

The name of the officer has not yet been released.

Newsday reported he lives in Deer Park.
