An X-ray machine in a cargo building at JFK Airport detected a suspicious object on Friday afternoon — possibly a pipe bomb, according to Fox New York.

According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs JFK, one of the packages running through an X-ray machine in the British Airways cargo terminal detected what appeared to be some kind of explosive.
“The building is evacuated and it continues to be evacuated,” Port Authority spokesman Joe Pentangelo told Patch.

As of 4:20 p.m., the NYPD’s bomb squad had just arrived at the terminal — building No. 66 — to evaluate the threat, he said.
The building where the suspected bomb was detected is for cargo processing only, so no airline passengers have been affected or evacuated.
A resident of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, wrote on Twitter that she saw the NYPD’s bomb squad speeding past her on the highway, en route to JFK.
