Here are the top stories today in Ditmas Park-Flatbush:

  1. During the past week Flatbush saw a 19.1% decrease in its crime rate, while East Flatbush saw its rate increase by 81.8%, according to NYPD records. 73 incidents were reported in the two neighborhoods, and crime in Brooklyn was up overall. (Brooklyn Reader)
  2. 9 Brooklyn nonprofits were awarded a total of $1.3 million in grants from the New York Community Trust – that includes SUNY Downstate Health Sciences, which says it's planning to develop a new treatment for "Flatbush diabetes," a type that is resistant to insulin and apparently prevalent in Flatbush.   3. There was still concern with compliance by City Workers as the vaccine mandate took effect at 5 p.m. on Friday. The exact numbers of those still unvaccinated weren't known at press time. (NYC Patch)
  4. Related: the NYC Police Pension Fund held a drive on Friday morning for officers planning on retiring early over the mandate. (Gothamist)
