Destiny Garcia, Brooklyn Teen, Charged With Murdering Her Parents: Police

The 15-year-old reportedly claimed she was sexually abused by her stepdad.

SHEEPSHEAD BAY, BROOKLYN — Destiny Garcia, 15, has been charged with using a gun and a knife to brutally murder her mom Rosie Sanchez, 39, and her stepdad Anderson Nuñez, 40, in the Sheepshead Bay apartment they all shared, police announced Monday.

NYPD investigators found the victims’ bodies decomposing in the apartment early Sunday evening — more than a week after the post-Christmas bloodbath, according to multiple news reports.

Garcia reportedly confessed her crime to a relative, who then informed police.

“On Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, at approximately 6:30 p.m., police responded to a call of a wellness check located at 2364 Batchelder Street, Apartment 5A,” the NYPD said in a statement sent to Patch.

“Upon arrival,” the department said, ”officers observed Victim No. 1, a 39-year-old female, with multiple gunshot wounds, and Victim No. 2, a 40-year-old male, with gunshot and stab wounds about the body.”

Police arrested Garcia soon after and charged her with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

The New York Daily News reported that in her initial confession to police, Garcia claimed she was sexually abused by her stepdad and that her mom refused to intervene.

However, NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said at a press conference Monday that Garcia’s story morphed over time.

“She said basically it was the mother that actually was abusive to her, physically abusive to her, in the past,” Boyce reportedly said at the presser. “We don’t believe this was at all an act of self-defense. She went and got a gun. ... That’s not consistent with someone [acting] in self-defense.”

Sanchez and Nuñez were married on Valentine’s Day 2010, according to their Facebook pages. Nuñez also posted photos from Valentine’s Day 2015, in which he poses with both mother and daughter, holding heart-shaped balloons and gifts.

The NYPD is reportedly looking to interview another 15-year-old suspected of helping Garcia murder her parents. From the New York Post:

In the days leading up to the Dec. 26 shooting, the teen called a 15-year-old male friend upstate and convinced him she was being raped by Nuñez, she told police.

Investigators believe she was lying, but the claim was enough to prompt the boy to leave his boarding school and make the trip to the Big Apple — bringing with him a gun that Destiny stashed in a drawer, the sources said.
