Ditmas Park Streets Dubbed Greenest in Brooklyn

The  (BBG) announced Wednesday the winners of its 2012 Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest, and the streets of Ditmas Park were among the victors.

Cortelyou Road between Westminster and Argyle Roads, and Newkirk Plaza between Newkirk and Foster Avenues tied for first place in the greenest commercial block in Brooklyn. 

Also honored was Ditmas Park's own , located on Cortelyou Road, taking first place for greenest storefront in Brooklyn.

Managed by BBG's community environmental horticulture program GreenBridge, the contest encourages members of block associations and merchants’ associations to work together to cultivate window boxes, container plantings, front gardens, storefront greenery, street tree beds and more.

Thousands of borough residents committed to beautifying their neighborhoods in the 18th year of competition. 

BBG president Scot Medbury, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, and Brooklyn Community Foundation President Marilyn Gelber attended Wednesday's festivities to congratulate the winners. Also in attendance were Councilman Mathieu Eugene, D-Ditmas Park and a representative from Congresswoman Yvette Clarke's office. 

“Bravo to this year’s Greenest Block winners...the Brooklyn Hearth Realty storefront in Ditmas Park, and from the commercial areas along Cortelyou Road and Newkirk Plaza," said Markowitz. 

“All of Brooklyn wins when thousands of residents and businesses spend hours every day tending to their flowers, trees, and shrubs and organizing cleanup and beautification projects to spruce up their blocks."
