Here are the top 3 stories in Ditmas Park-Flatbush today:
- Mayor Eric Adams announced Wednesday his plan to "reimagine" 1,000 of New York City's most dangerous street crossings, by raising sidewalks, creating new bike corrals, and adding new turn signals. These changes will come with increased enforcement of a new law requiring vehicles to fully stop – not just yield – to pedestrians at crosswalks without lights. Adams made the announcement at an intersection in Flatbush, considered one of the most dangerous neighborhoods for traffic accidents. Councilmember Rita Joseph said "Crossing the street should not be a matter of life or death," of 2021's record fatalities. (New York City Patch)
- Permits have been filed for an 8-story residential building at 435 Coney Island Avenue in Flatbush. The site is owned by Rogers Builders & Development. (New York YIMBY)
- The Department of Education is creating, for the first time ever, a division specifically dedicated to the over 7,000 public school students living in foster homes – 90% of whom are Black and/or Hispanic. The move was met with praise by Rita Joseph. (NY Daily News)
