Location of Ditmas Park Home Revealed!
You gave your best guess of the location of the house in the photo, and now it's time to provide the answer!
Brooklyn Borough Historian Ron Schweiger home with Ditmas Park Patch and we shared it with you!
You gave it your best guess, and now it's time to provide the answer!
This was a tough one as only someone extremely familiar with the history of Ditmas Park would be likely to know the answer, but we thought it best to kick off this photo hunt series with an oldie.
The picture provided by Schweiger was of the home of Dean Alvord, a real estate developer who bought a large tract of land south of Church Avenue in the 1890's that was eventually named Prospect Park South.
Alvord's goal was to create a suburb for the wealthy and was responsible for the development of many of the Victorian mansions in the area. His own home stood at 1522 Albermarle Road near the corner of Marlborough Road.
Is the home not ringing any bells? Here's why: the mansion was eventually purchased in 1920 by Israel Matz, founder of the Ex-Lax company. After years of neglect, it was destroyed by a fire in 1958. Nothing was ever built in its place, and now the property serves as the Flatbush Community Garden! Only the steps of the home still stand.
This was a tricky one, but stick around as Ditmas Park Patch continues to provide photos, both old and new, for you to guess the location!
