Sustainable Flatbush Looks for Community Garden Workday Participants

On Saturday from 9:30 a.m.–1 p.m., Sustainable Flatbush and other volunteers from local organizations will meet at the Flatbush Reformed Church to work on the Church Avenue Communal Garden.

Urban Farm and Garden Director Sheryll Durrant, Kady Ferguson and Anne Pope will help lead the effort to work on the native plant garden, edible and pollinator garden as well as on the compost system.

In the native garden, participants can learn why native gardens are better to plant and better for the environment, learn what is and isn't a weed, as well as how to develop a native plant streetscape.

Participants can also head to the edible and pollinator garden to learn how to grown their own food in a container and garden on a budget. They can also plant vegetables and herbs, plant pollinators to attract bees, butterflies and other insects. Participants can also adopt a project in the garden.

Help will also be needed with repairs, organizing tools, building a work roster, mulching pathways and turning compost.

There will be food and snacks at the end of the work day. Remember to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Gloves and tools will be provided.
