East Village Fire Kills 71-Year-Old Man, Police Say

The fatal fire happened in a building with a non-working smoke detector, authorities said.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — A fire in an East Village apartment building left a 71-year-old man dead and three other people injured on Sunday morning, police said.

The man, Barry Allen, was pronounced dead at the scene after firefighters extinguished the fire, according to the NYPD.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 244 E. Seventh St. at about 7:25 a.m. on Sunday. City fire marshals say that the fire was caused by an unattended candle in one of the building's apartments, and that the apartment did not have a smoke alarm. In addition, a smoke alarm in a public hallway in the building wasn't working.
