East Villagers Rejoice As Astor Square Cube Is Back

The Alamo was returned to its proper place Tuesday.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — After two years of repairs, the infamous Alamo, better known as the spinning Astor Place Cube, was finally put back in its proper place Tuesday. Astor Square's Facebook group was live with the cube's installation, which showed the cube strapped to a truck and a crane preparing to place it on its platform. A crowd of dozens of onlookers looked anxious to see the final product:

We don't really need to tell you that the cube is an East Village staple. It was the subject of New York City's best halloween costume of 2015. It's clearly been thrown up on multiple times by drunk NYU students. And most importantly, it was set up with a homemade cardboard girlfriend-cube.

The Alamo, by artist Tony Rosenthal, was taken to storage in fall 2014 while Astor Square underwent extensive construction. The cube was originally supposed to grace us with its return in June, but it was delayed until August, and in August, it was delayed again. The beloved hunk of art was first installed in 1967.
