FDNY Ambulance Hits, Kills 81-Year-Old Man on 14th Street

The man was crossing the street when he was struck by the FDNY ambulance, driven by a 22-year-old EMT.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — An elderly man was hit and killed by an FDNY ambulance on East 14th Street on Monday afternoon, police said.

The 81-year-old man, Gen Zhan, was walking northbound onto 14th Street at 2:20 p.m. when he was struck by the ambulance making a turn onto 14th Street from Second Avenue, according to a preliminary police investigation. Zhan suffered severe body trauma and was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he died. Zhan was about 15 blocks south of his home in Kips Bay.

The 22-year-old ambulance driver stayed on the scene, police said. The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the accident.
