Gabay's Outlet Closes After 77 Years In The East Village

The family-owned clothing shop first opened its doors in the neighborhood in 1940.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — A longtime boutique clothing shop in the East Village has closed after 77 years in the neighborhood.

Gabay's Outlet, located at 195 Ave A, closed in December, EV Grieve was first to report. The store sold designer clothes, bags and shoes at discount prices.

Store owner Joseph Gabay announced the closure on his personal Facebook page in December.

"It's plain and simple, we are closing because our business model does not work in today's society," he wrote. "Amazon has had a huge impact and made it impossible to compete."

Patch was unable to contact anyone at Gabay's Outlet on Tuesday. The business's website is no longer active.

Gabay's Outlet was run by three generations of Gabays, starting with Sam Gabay in the 1940, according to the store's Facebook page. Sam Gabay opened his first shop on St. Marks Place before moving to 225 First Ave. in 1970. In 2014, the shop moved to its final home at 195 Avenue A.
