Hardcore Workout 'Switch Playground' Replacing New York Central Art Supply

The South Africa-based fitness concept, a "playground" for adults, is constructing a new facility where the legendary art store used to be.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — The signage just went up Thursday for the newest, trendiest hardcore workout coming to the East Village called Switch Playground. The South Africa-based group fitness concept is going to replace what used to be the warehouse for New York Central Art Supply, which sadly shuttered earlier this year after 111 years of business.

Switch Playground's slogan is "New York's First Playground." It "combines carefully selected aspects of cardiovascular training, functional training, boxing, plyometric training, core stability and power-flow yoga to create a perfectly balanced playground for the body and soul," according to its website. This promo video shows a bunch of sweaty, muscular people pushing themselves to their limits set to intense music. If that's your thing, you're in luck.

The company hasn't announced when it will open its facility on 12th Street between Third and Fourth avenues, but you can sign up for more information here.

So there you have it. A custom art shop that supplied decades of art materials used by the likes of Andy Warhol in the 60s to be replaced by a self-proclaimed adult playground. Must be the East Village.
