NYC City Council Election District 2 Results: Carlina Rivera Wins

Carlina Rivera will be the next representative of District 2 in City Council.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — Carlina Rivera will be the new City Council member for District 2, according to preliminary election results.

WNYC called the race for Rivera, a first time political candidate, just after 10:15 p.m. on Tuesday night. The Democrat previously served as the legislative director for her predecessor, the current City Council Member Rosie Mendez. Rivera will represent District 2, which includes the East Village along with parts of the Lower East Side and Murray Hill.

Rivera pulled ahead of a crowded field of Democratic candidates to clinch the nomination. Early results analyzed by WNYC showed that Rivera netted nearly 84 percent of the vote throughout the district, with the majority of precincts reporting. Jimmy McMillan, a Republican of the "Rent Is Too Damn High" Party fame, netted 11 percent of the vote.

Here's everything you need to know before Tuesday for the City Council District 2 election.


Who are the candidates?

Carlina Rivera is the nominee for the Democratic and Working Families parties. Rivera is the former legislative director for current District 2 Council Member Rosie Mendez, and has raised more money and gathered more nominations than any other candidate in the race.

One of Rivera's more colorful opponents is Jimmy McMillan, of "The Rent Is Too Damn High" Party fame. This year, McMillan is running as the nominee for both the Republican and the Rent Is 2 Damn High parties. Also running are Jasmin Sanchez with the Liberal Party, Don Garrity of the Libertarian party Manuel Cavaco.

When can I vote?

The elections take place on Tuesday, November 7. Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. Patch will be covering the results of the biggest races as they happen.


What about the citywide races?

Mayor Bill de Blasio is running for his second term in office. Also of note will be the results for the Manhattan district attorney's office. Prosecutors are almost always re-elected, but thanks to lots of recent critical press, Manhattan district attorney Cy Vance is facing unexpectedly viable challengers.
