Ride A Vintage Subway Train Through Manhattan For The Holidays

Travel on the style of train that inspired Billy Strayhorn's "Take the A Train" this holiday season.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — Talk about traveling through time.

The New York Transit Museum is rolling out its fleet of vintage trains for its annual "Holiday Nostalgia Rides." New Yorkers can take historic subway rides on the 1930s R1-9 train cars between Thanksgiving and New Years.

For the price of a standard MetroCard swipe, straphangers can ride trains featuring rattan seats, paddle ceiling fans, incandescent light bulbs and replica subway ads from the era.
