WATCH: Park Rangers Rescue Sick Hawk In Tompkins Square Park

Two urban park rangers caught the sick hawk in Tompkins Square Park. Now the bird is receiving treatment at a Long Island facility.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — An under the weather fledgling of famed hawk couple Amelia and Christos was wrangled by two urban park rangers this week and sent to a Long Island facility for treatment.

The couple's younger hawk has delighted visitors at Tompkins Square Park recently with his high-energy antics including playing in the gardens and chasing after prey, but the older bird has been acting lethargicand slow to come out of the tree tops and concerned bird watchers gave the city's urban park rangers a call.

Video taken by avid hawk watcher and photographer Laura Goggins shows rangers grab the bird with a net. The bird of prey was initially transferred to the Animal Medical Center in the Upper East Side but is now receiving treatment from Wildlife In Need Of Rescue And Rehabilitation or WINORR on Long Island.

Workers with the Animal Medical Center initially performed blood work on the bird to check for West Nile virus, lead and rodenticide poisoning, according to a WINORR Facebook post. Early test results indicate that the hawk may have anemia or exposure to rodenticide, the social media post continues.

The city's Parks Department and WINORR did not respond to requests for comment.
