Earth Hour 2025 In East Hampton Aims To Spark Climate Change Awareness

EAST HAMPTON, NY — East Hampton Town is joining hands and hearts around the world to participate in Earth Hour 2025.

According to town officials, the worldwide initiative was organized by the World Wildlife Fund to raise awareness about climate change and the importance of sustainable living.

On Saturday, March 22, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, residents and businesses are encouraged to turn off non-essential lights, joining millions around the globe in an symbolic act of environmental solidarity, the town said.

Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia, in 2007 and has since grown into a global movement, with iconic landmarks and communities worldwide turning off their lights to highlight the need for action on climate change, officials said.

"In alignment with our commitment to environmental stewardship, the East Hampton town board adopted Resolution 2025-449, reaffirming our dedication to combating climate change," town officials said. "This resolution supports Earth Hour and calls upon our community to participate by switching off non-essential lighting during the designated hour."

"Earth Hour serves as a powerful reminder of the collective impact we can have when we come together for a common cause," said Councilmember Cate Rogers, sponsor of the resolution. "By participating, East Hampton demonstrates its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and the well-being of future generations."

East Hampton Town Supervisor Kathee Burke-Gonzalez also expressed her support: "Our community has always valued the natural beauty that surrounds us. Participating in Earth Hour is a simple yet meaningful way to show our dedication to preserving our environment. I encourage all residents and businesses to join us in this global initiative."

East Hampton's participation in Earth Hour reflects a broader commitment to sustainability, as outlined in its Climate Emergency Declaration adopted in 2021, town officials said, adding: "We continue to implement initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting renewable energy sources within our community."
