New Nature Trail Kiosk Welcomes, Informs Visitors

Ladies Village Improvement Society arranges for kiosk to change information with the seasons.

The Ladies Village Improvement Society formally unveiled the new kiosk it installed at the Nature Trail in East Hampton Village in a short ceremony with village officials on Thursday.

The informational kiosk has actually already been updated once since being installed. The LVIS Nature Trail Committee doesn't want to see the information go stale and plans on changing it with the seasons, according to Diane Benson, the chair of the committee.

Benson, who lives next door to the village park, which includes the Duck Pond, said the committee wanted to do something that would welcome visitors to the 24-acre preserve. She hopes the kiosk teaches them about the trail and the wildlife that call it home.

The committee teamed up with Dell Cullum, a wildlife photographer who lives in East Hampton, and his images will be featured in the kiosk.

Right now, there's information about the breeding and mating season that's underway. By late May, it says visitors should start to see babies, such as ducklings and raccoon cubs. There's information on what's best for the ducks to eat — cracked corn, not loaves of bread — and where you can purchase some. The information is also available on the LVIS website.

"This is another indication of what our wonderful little village is all about," Mayor Paul F. Rickenbach Jr. said before he cut the ceremonial ribbon on Thursday. "I just can't take you enough. On behalf of our village board of trustees, we are very fortunate."
