Opinion: God Exists On The East End

It's that wonderful a place to be.

This is not about any religion or cult this is about the amazing natural beauty of the Hamptons. One cannot help but notice that on any given day the wonders of being on the east end of Long Island is a feast of visions that makes you pause. It is a paradise of sorts. Yes, there can be traffic and on summer weekends crowds but then there is that special breeze hovering over the breaking ocean waves pumping vitality into the region like the ticking of an endless clock. This isn’t about whether one believes in God or some sort of superior being, this is about what is right there in front of us all.

This author once interviewed Jeff Bline, a fisherman who quit school at 15 to come east to be a commercial fisherman for the rest of his life. At the time of the interview, he was in his late 50’s. He was sewing his nets and sipping a beer while also smoking a cigarette all at the same time. While doing all that he said this, β€œI am not a religious guy, but when I am out there fishing on a clear night in the ocean some 75 miles off Montauk I can’t help but pause and look up at the stars. It’s really something out there and while looking up you can’t help but realize there has to be some superior something.” Then he chuckled and said, β€œ There are no atheists in a really bad storm at sea.”

If you are fortunate to sail or surf, swim or even walk the ocean, bays, or beaches of the east end you will have those special moment of solace, peace and clarity. It’s like watching a dog run full speed in the surf, totally in heaven on earth. Then there are the historic roads that wonder up and about the whole east end. To this day the vistas of farm land, some 400 years old are everywhere, and you see the gift of very fertile soil the east end has. The founding folks who landed here stayed as have their legacy.

Then there is the abundance of wild life! Whale and porpoises viable from shore as are the stripe bass in the fall. The mighty birds such as Bald Eagles, Osprey, Heron, dart about to keep the millions of seagulls, Canadian geese, and other birds company. Isn’t there a special delight when seeing the occasional Humming bird pop up out of the flowers?

American patriot James Otis once proclaimed in a Boston courtroom, β€œA man’s home is his castle,” and in the Hamptons there are some homes that truly are castles. The very successful live and stay in them when they can because quite frankly all are drawn to beautiful things and the east end has an abundance of beautiful things. A simple long bike ride really brings home this point. Yes there are alarming situations and challenges that modern times manifests everywhere even the east end but in the end, hopefully smart people will do the right responsible things.

Poetry once was one of the few avenues to express love of life, a person, or of nature. Now we have camera’s with instant photo and video/audio capacities. Instead of sending thoughtful verses, folks send selfie’s, videos or photos via their device. Often, the joy of being out east is the theme of the photos and videos. Everyone once to send the good cheer out into the world to their friends and followers.

It all works, the earth spins around every twenty-four hours while rotating around the sun in exactly a year’s time. The seasons come and go at the same time every year, as we count time in terms of decades in our lifetime. Yes there are the undisputed principle’s of proven science at play such as specific gravity, magnetic poles and atmospheric pressures. However, in the end looking at so many sunrises and sunsets one has to believe there is a hand, a force, a superior mind that keeps all these things happening with a specific order. For one this author still cannot grasp the complete thoughts of the β€œBig Bang Theory.” What existed and how before that event. There is a magic to the church bells of the Hamptons, something has to be watching without video and surveillance apparatus.
