PHOTOS: Scoville Hall Knocked Down

The historic home of the Amagansett Presbyterian Church was ruined in a 2011 fire.

After it was devastated by a fire in October of 2011, Scoville Hall – the home of the Amagansett Presbyterian Church as well as the Amagansett Food Pantry – was basically knocked to the ground on Thursday.

The building which dated back to the 1920s was likely the victim of an electrical fire, which claimed all of the church's records – dating back to the 1860s – as victims. Following the blaze, locals – including members of the Amagansett Fire Department, of which the Rev. Steve Howarth is a member – held numerous fundraising events to move toward getting the building back up.

Howarth said on Friday that the long wait to reach even a knock-down – nevermind a rebuild – has been a long time coming after going back and forth with the church's insurance company. The company is covering damage above the first floorΒ sills, he said, where the demo knocked down to. But more inspections from engineers, and further negotiations will take place, before any further demo or building can take place.

Still, Howarth said, at least some progress has been visibly made.

"It's certainly a relief to have a visible sign of progress right there," he said. "It was just painful to continue to look at the burnt our hulk of a building. Plus, we felt responsible for that ugly shell and the impact on the life of the neighbors it had as well. So we're glad to have that gone."
