VIDEO: Tribute To Long Island Roots Of Red Sox Great

BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY — One of baseball's great stars, Carl Yastrzemski played in his entire 23-year major league career with the Boston Red Sox.

"Yaz" was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.

But, the product of the East End, got his baseball start at Bridgehampton High School. The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame took the opportunity to recognize Yastrzemski with a historical marker as the school brought baseball back for the first time in four decades.

"The kids who play there for generations to come can see that name every time they touch the field," Chris Vaccaro, the hall's executive director, said on Wednesday's "Patch AM."

The marker was unveiled behind the field.

Vaccaro said they hope to add markers across the county each year. They are installing another historic symbol next month at the Riverhead School District headquarters to commemorate a game that Satchel Paige pitched in 1950.
