McVey Elementary Recognized Locally for Excellence
East Meadow school denied National Blue Ribbon status by Department of Education, due to number of students opting out of tests
Regent Roger Tilles and senator Kemp Hannon honored East Meadow‘s George McVey Elementary School for its academic achievements during the school district’s Board of Education meeting on Nov. 19.
Tilles and Hannon recognized McVey for meeting all criteria to be awarded National Blue Ribbon status, despite the Department of Education not granting the award to the school, due to the number of students who opted out of state assessment tests last year.
“We thank Regent Tilles and Senator Hannon for recognizing the injustice that was done to McVey and for recognizing the school’s great accomplishments,” said superintendent of schools Leon J. Campo.
