NEW YORK — New Yorkers, let's enjoy the summer heat while we have it.

The Farmers' Almanac is predicting a harsh winter across the United States in 2022-23, and New York is expected to have it worse than many states.

The Northeast winter is expected to have "significant shivers" and be "slushy, icy and snowy," according to the Farmers' Almanac. So, be ready to grab your shovels, snow boots, mitts and favorite mug for hot cocoa.

Winter 2022-2023 should be dominated by an active storm track in the eastern half of the country, running from the western Gulf of Mexico to the northeast, across the Virginias, and across interior New York State and New England, according to the Farmers' Almanac.

Plan on winter starting pretty much on time. The season officially begins with the winter solstice on Wednesday, Dec. 21, and meteorological winter won't be far behind. Plan on lots of snow and bitterly cold air, the Farmers' Almanac says.

Around mid-January, the eastern two-thirds of the country is expected to see either heavy rain or snow, also followed by bitterly cold, 40 degrees Fahrenheit below zero temperatures in one of the coldest outbreaks of arctic air in several years.

At least winter will be at its harshest for only a couple of months, the almanac suggests.

"A cold December and a very cold January might make readers in the Northeast shake and shiver," the Farmers' Almanac wrote. "But February will bring milder temperatures that should make winter seem more bearable."

After the vernal equinox, when the country should be slipping into spring, expect a lion-like end of March, according to the almanac. There should be a wide variety of weather conditions, ranging from heavy snows to torrents of rain to gusty thunderstorms across much of the nation.
