A Step Back in Time to Solve A Crime
On a beautiful Tuesday afternoon, at Elsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale, the Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) Book Club met for a pre-recorded video chat with author Marie Benedict on her recently published book, “Queens of Crime.” The historical fiction novel is about five famous female mystery writers of the 1930’s, including Agatha Crhistie, Baroness Emma Orczy, Ngaio Marsh, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Margery Allingham, all working together to solve a real-life crime. These ladies formed a sisterhood aimed at surmounting barriers erected against female writers and they did this while solving crimes against women and re-affirming the power of friendship among women.
Prior to meeting, participants were asked to review a list of pre-ordained questions tailored to best reflect their inner sleuth and find the choice that best resonates with them. The video chat with the author revealed that she focuses on the untold stories of women throughout history by researching heroines from the past.
Through the efforts of 2nd VP Debbie Podolski and WCF Book Club Chair Elaine Ryan, a Victorian Tea with beautiful centerpieces was prepared with guests bringing their own special tea cup. Held at Elsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale, participants added to the ambiance of the moment by dressing in 1920s and 1930s attire as they enjoyed finger sandwiches, desserts and sparkling cider. A Round Table discussion of the plot followed where each member gave a numerical rating to the book. This selection averaged a 4.5 out of 5.
On Sunday, September 14, the Inc. Village of Farmingdale held its 15th Annual “Art in the Park Show & Sale” on the Village Green. This event was free to exhibit and attend and more than 20 local artists displayed their magnificent art work and crafts. Everyone was encouraged to enjoy the outstanding Children’s Clothesline Artwork Display where children through 5th grade received participation stickers. There were 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place and Honorable Mention winners. Village Trustee, Cheryl Parisi, and her husband, Nick, displayed their many beautiful handcrafted items.
Francis Rotondo was honored and thanked for her 15 years of dedication to this event. Ms. Rotondo started the first Art in the Park in 2015 with help from members of the WCF. The event was initiated to promote local artists and community engagement. This was her last year as chairman and she was presented with a proclamation and gift from the Village.
