WATCH: LI Couple Battles Kidney Disease, Leukemia Together
Bill Moritz is seeking a live kidney. His wife Madeline was going to be the donor until she was diagnosed with cancer.

FARMINGDALE, NY — A Farmingdale couple is facing a barrage of medical issues. Bill Moritz has been suffering from kidney disease for more than a decade, but his condition worsened in the last couple of years. He needs a live kidney transplant.
His wife Madeline was ready to provide the life-saving organ, but became diagnosed with leukemia and was removed from consideration, even though she is now in remission.
Bill has been on the National Kidney Donor Registry for the past two years.

"With my blood type, the waitlist is seven years," he told "Patch AM."
However, people can help "by volunteering to get screened and then becoming a live donor," he said.

Madeline is aware that this is the time to search for a donor.
"We want to avoid dialysis at all cost," she said.
For now, Bill is forced to wait, as proactively as possible. But when his wife got sick, he was able to put his illness on the back burner.
"Honestly, my thoughts went to her. I was much more concerned with her," he said.
As the couple faces its health challenges, Madeline's brother Ralph Balsamo started a GoFundMe to assist the Moritzes. The page has raised more than $12,000 as of this writing.
Bill is working with the North Shore University Hospital Transplant Center. For more information about donating, you can call 516 562-0550.
