All eight HAFTR students who competed in the final round of the Long Island Math Fair on April 29 were awarded medals for their outstanding research. Outstanding recognition went to Gabrielle Lovett and Jonathon Steinfeld, who were awarded silver medals. Gabrielle did her research in Euclidean and hyperbolic tessellations and Jonathon worked on random walks and stochastic matrices. In addition, Lowell Brazin, Atara Charnoff, Hillel Friedman, Wade Miller, Rebecca Slochowsky and Avichai Vazana were awarded bronze medals. Lowell did research in Euclidean and hyperbolic tessellations, Atara explored triangular recursion relationships, and Hillel investigated patterns of prime numbers.
Other outstanding research was done by Wade Miller, who explored and developed theorems related to Gaussian integers. Furthermore, Rebecca Slochowsky investigated infinite sets, and Avichai Vazana researched Fibonacci numbers and their relationships. All eight students worked with their mentor, Mr. Neil Bernstein, chairman of the mathematics department at the HAFTR High School.
