Long Island American Water Partners with NAWC-NY to Provide Scholarships for High School Students

The New York Chapter of the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC-NY) launched a scholarship program for high school seniors interested in pursuing a career in the water utility industry or related fields.  As a member of NAWC-NY, Long Island American Water will participate by offering two $2,500 scholarships to high school students in its service area who will be attending a university or college in New York and pursuing a degree related to the water utility industry or related field.

“Education is essential to providing high-quality water service,” said William Varley, chairman of NAWC-NY and president of Long Island American Water.  “This scholarship opportunity will help students pursue a career in the water industry to help maintain our water supply for future generations.”

This scholarship is being offered to New York high school seniors in Long Island American Water’s service area who meet the following criteria:

· Is a United States citizen

· Has been a New York resident for five years and resides within Long Island American Water’s service territory: Atlantic Beach, Baldwin, Bay Park, Cedarhurst, East Rockaway, Hewlett, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck, Inwood, Island Park, Lakeview, Lawrence, Lynbrook, Malverne, Meadowmere, North Woodmere, Oceanside, Roosevelt, South Hempstead, Valley Stream, West Hempstead, Woodmere and Woodsburgh

· Is a High school senior pursuing a degree at a New York college or university (two- or four-year) as an undergraduate student (part- or full-time)

· Has maintained at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 GPA grading scale

· Is enrolling in a curriculum related to the water utility industry or related field such as natural resource management, environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, engineering, computer science, environmental law, etc.

To enter, students must return a completed application, along with their high school transcript and three letters of recommendation to NAWC-NY by April 8, 2011. Students can find additional information along with the application on Long Island American Water’s website at www.longislandamwater.com.
