You Can Help Stamp Out Hunger on LI

The need for food assistance across America has never been greater. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s annual study measuring food security in the United States, the number of Americans living in a food insecure home surpassed 50 million in 2009. Most alarming is that approximately one-third of those at risk of hunger are children (17.2 million).

To combat hunger locally, Island Harvest has joined forces with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the US Postal Service by participating in the nation’s largest single-day food drive. The Stamp Out Hunger food drive, held annually on the second Saturday in May, will help over 285,000 Long Islanders — including 110,000 children — who face the risk of going hungry every day.

Participation in the Stamp Out Hungerfood drive is easy. Simply leave non-perishable food items such as canned goods, pasta, rice, boxed juices, etc., next to your mailbox on Saturday, May 14, 2011.  Your postal carrier will do the rest. Donated food will be used to replenish Long Island’s food pantries, soup kitchens and other feeding programs serviced by Island Harvest, Long Island’s food bank.
