Baseball history was made yesterday when Woodmere's Jacob Steinmetz was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 17-year-old pitcher and Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns alumnus is the first practicing Orthodox Jewish player to be drafted into major league baseball. A statue dedicated to Kelly Ann Tinyes, who was murdered at age 13, was unveiled at Grant Park.

- Zach Braziller looks at a Woodmere teenager who made history as the first Orthodox Jew to be drafted by Major League Baseball yesterday. Six feet, 6 inches tall pitcher, 224 pounds Jacob Steinmetz has a scholarship to Fordham University and a 97-mile per hour fastball. Steinmetz was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the third round. (New York Post and Patch)
- Newsday has a video story on a memorial held Saturday at Grant Park in Hewlett to dedicate a statue to Kelly Ann Tinyes, a 13-year-old Valley Stream girl who was murdered by a neighbor in 1989. (Newsday)
- Jeff Bessen looks at the evolution of the Five Towns Community Center's health fair, held in Lawrence on June 26. David Martin Chavez, a coordinator from the Health & Welfare Council of Long Island, said he helps more than 100 people a day at the center, referring them to needed assistance programs. (LI Herald)
