ELMONT, NY — Tributes are still pouring for one of the greatest Islanders.

Clark Gillies died on Friday at the age of 67.

He was a symbol of the Isles toughness in the early 1980s when they won four straight Stanley Cups.

The Islanders will honor their former captain by wearing a Number 9 patch for the remainder of the season.

"The National Hockey League mourns the passing of Clark Gillies, a tower of strength on the ice for the dynastic New York Islanders of the early 1980s and a pillar of the Long Island community ever since," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement.

Gillies totaled 319 goals and 378 assists in 958 NHL regular-season games. His Hall of Fame career included 47 goals and 47 assists in 164 Stanley Cup playoff games.

Gillies, who also played with the Buffalo Sabres during a 14-year tenure, died of cancer, the NHL.com said.
