Happy Friday, people of Five Towns! Let's start today off on an informed note. Here's everything worth knowing today in Five Towns.

A former East Rockaway resident is accused of mistreating a juvenile tiger. Two men were stopped by police in Inwood, leading to a foot chase and weapons arrest. Some people are reporting side effects from overusing hand sanitizer. And a Cedarhurst man is still searching for a bone marrow match from the Jewish community to help him overcome cancer.

Here are the top stories in Five Towns today:

  1. Jeff Bessen reports that two men were arrested in Inwood and one charged for handgun possession on Wednesday. Police spotted a gray 2001 Nissan heading south on Sheridan Boulevard with a temporary license plate and not staying in the lane. Jamel Thompson, 41, of Far Rockaway, fled the scene and was ultimately arrested. (LI Herald)
  2. Since the pandemic, reports of adverse effects from too much hand sanitizer have increased, the FDA reports, including episodes of dizziness and headache. Dr. Aaron Glatt is the chief of infectious diseases at Mount Sinai South Nassau Medical Center and he says that if you don't have soap and water, hand sanitizer is still a better alternative than possibly spreading infectious diseases.   3. Jeff Bessen tells us that a Woodmere resident was just chosen as chairman of the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association. Oliver Brodlieb is the fourth generation car dealer in his family. His grandfather, Theodore Brodlieb once owned Brodlieb Motors in Woodmere and he is currently president of East Hills Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Greenvale. (LI Herald)
  4. Members of the Five Towns community came out to help local resident "Shlomo" on Sunday. The Gift of Life Marrow Registry held a bone marrow testing event at the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway to find a match for the Cedarhurst resident with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia.   5. Mike Smollins has a story on a former East Rockaway resident under fire for his treatment of animals. Larry Wallach was cited in 2017 for "harboring a pet wallaby." According to PETA, he recently posted videos on Facebook showing him using an electric prod to scare a juvenile tiger he keeps in a rundown enclosure. Wallach received several violations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. (LI Herald)
