Town Appeases Railroad Commuters at Woodmere Lots

Restrictions put in to prevent people from leaving cars in spots all night.

In a move to appease railroad commuters, the Town of Hempstead recently changed the parking restrictions on the lots next to the Woodmere train station.

Signs restricting parking between 3 and 5 a.m. were added to parking lots 5, 6 and 8 within the past two weeks. The changes came about after the town received requests from commuters that complained residents of nearby apartment buildings would leave their cars in the spots overnight.

“Those lots have always been commuter lots,” said Mike Deery, a spokesperson for the Town of Hempstead. “The town always reevaluates and monitors parking restrictions throughout the town. We always have an open mind and open ear.”

Deery pointed out that the apartment building residents could park in lot 4, which does not have the new restriction.

A resident of a building near the train station, who did not want to give his name, said he does “feel for the commuters,” but that “on the street parking is hard to come by” for the apartment dwellers. He added, “I don’t know what the solution is.”

The town may adjust the restrictions in the future based on resident feedback, Deery said.
