Trapped Woman Rescued From Burning Home In Nassau: Police

The woman was forced to jump from a second-floor window onto a carport, police said.

ELMONT, NY — A house fire in Elmont caused one resident to evacuate early Monday, police said.

Officers observed flames and smoke on the first floor of a Doherty Avenue home just before 1 a.m. They were told that a woman was on the second floor. The officers walked up a few steps, but with met with heavy smoke and extreme heat, police said.

They backed out of the residence, but were able to communicate with the trapped woman through a second-floor window.

She was directed to exit from the window onto an attached carport.

The Elmont Fire Department used a ladder to bring her to safety. Firefighters from Elmont and Valley Stream extinguished the fire.

The Arson/Bomb Squad Detectives and Nassau County Fire Marshals responded. An investigation is ongoing.
