VIDEO: Mangano Warns of LI Prescription Drug Abuse Epidemic
County executive, at a Woodmere pharmacy, says residents need to be active to protect against abuse.
Nassau County Edward Mangano declared that prescription drug abuse has become an epidemic on Long Island and warned residents to keep their medicines locked up and properly dispose of them.
Officials at the press conference, which took place at Five Towns Pharmacy on Thursday, said that prescription medicines are a gateway drug. People can start abusing prescription opiates for $30 then switch to heroin for $10, said Jeff Reynolds of Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.
Mangano also mentioned that a robbery for drugs took place in a Nassau pharmacy over the past weekend, and said he wants to prevent tragedies like the one that occurred in a Medford pharmacy in June, when four people were killed.

Residents can bring their unused and unwanted drugs to any police precinct in the county for disposal, Mangano said. The county has set up a drug disposal program that will make its way through different locations in the county starting on Sept. 10.
