Atlantic Terminal Mall Escalator Malfunctions, Two People Rushed to Hospital

According to one witness, the escalator 'yanked people, catapulting them right on top of each other.'

FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN — Two people were rushed to the hospital in serious but stable condition on Tuesday night after a person fell down an escalator at the Atlantic Terminal Mall and caused a chain reaction of several others to fall as well, the FDNY said.

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m., according to the FDNY. Five people suffered minor injuries in addition to the two people taken to the hospital, the FDNY said.

A witness told ABC7 that people were walking on the escalator which wasn't moving. The escalator began moving suddenly, causing the first person to fall.

"The escalator malfunctioned like if you had a roll of toilet paper and you yank it — that's how the escalator yanked people, catapulting them right on top of each other," a witness named Denise told NBCNews. "Everybody ended up in a heap on the floor."

Atlantic Terminal Mall did not respond to a request for comment from Patch.
