Shooting Noises Reported in Fort Greene, Brooklyn

Near the Whitman Houses.

UPDATE: An NYPD spokeswoman tells Patch that the heavy police presence in the area on Saturday was in response to a “crowd condition” at the Ingersoll Houses, which are situated alongside the Whitman Houses. “It was a disorderly crowd,” she says. However, she could not explain the loud noises residents heard around midnight.

Loud exploding noises, possibly gunshots, rang out just after midnight on Saturday night near the Whitman Houses in upper Fort Greene, residents said on Twitter.

“11 cop cars jut pulled into the Whitman Houses in Fort Greene,” said a Twitter user named Erik K.

He later told Patch: “People on sidewalks seem normal but lots of lights and a chopper.”

Another resident, Steven Caruso, told Patch on Twitter that he’d heard what sounded like shots fired at the same location.

“Just heard two gunshots very close by and now listening to helicopters hovering over the street,” he wrote. “Happy to be moving soon.”

As of 1:30 a.m., both the NYPD and FDNY press offices could not provide information about any activity in the area.

“This must be serious — 2 firetrucks just went the wrong way on Dekalb and Washington Park,” tweeted @CumberlandStBK, an account that follows news in the area.
