Eric “Carl” McKinney, a 31-year-old Brooklyn resident and reported music producer, is dead after being shot inside his black Jeep Wrangler in Downtown Brooklyn around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday night.
Police say they found McKinney inside his vehicle with gunshot wounds to his left arm and torso near Ashland Place and Dekalb Avenue — just one block from the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Harvey Theater.
He was rushed to nearby Brooklyn Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the NYPD.
The man’s family identified him to TV news reporters as a music producer and father of three who lived in Fort Greene.
“He don’t bother nobody, so when I got the news I thought they were playing with me,” his cousin, Latoya Moffatt, told NBC4.
Dozens of tributes to McKinney appeared on social media in the hours following his sudden death. ”My Brother. Love Forever,” the rapper Fabolous posted to Instagram. ”RIP Carl,” wrote the celebrity stylist Emily B.
Paul Cain, another rapper on Fabolous’ label, wrote: “This Can’t Be Right. I’ll Never Be The Same. I Love You Forever Lil Bro!”
McKinney’s Vine account is filled with videos of him goofing around with his young kids. His tagline on Instagram reads: “Doing what I want, when I want, where I want, how I want, with whom I want, as much as I want.”
The victim appears to be one of the three McKinney brothers, known to be longtime friends of Fabolous and part of the Street Family crew he grew up with in Brooklyn. They frequently wear items from his clothing line, Blood’s Thicker, printed with the words “The Family.”
Another of the brothers — Shamel McKinney, then 25 — was stabbed to death in a Manhattan nightclub in 2007. (“He was a good father,” Carl told the Daily News at the time, but then reportedly “became too distraught to say more.”)
The third brother, Darryl “Mr. Ruggs” McKinney, wrote on Instagram on Monday afternoon: “How yall gonna f****** leave me here alone.”
Carl McKinney was reportedly stopped at a red light when an unknown suspect ran up to his Jeep and fired at least eight shots through the window.
According to the Daily News, the shooting victim tried to drive his Jeep, which had a shattered passenger window, away from the crime scene, but immediately crashed into a fence on Dekalb.
“The investigation is ongoing,” the NYPD said Monday morning.
The NYPD reportedly investigated Fabolous’ crew in 2007 in connection to a string of jewelry robberies in which celebrities had chains snatched off their necks. At the time, police believed Shamel McKinney’s death may have been related to the chain snatchings.
But Fabolous has long denied the allegations. “We was kinda just gettin’ a bad rap, I think,” he said in a 2013 interview. ”Once things started happening — or you know how the streets talk; they just say lil’ things.”
