Fire Guts Apartment at Whitman Houses

Blaze called in at 11:20 a.m. Monday.

A fire in a building at Whitman Houses heavily damaged an apartment late Monday morning.

The fire began around 11:20 a.m. in a unit on the fourth floor of 32 Auburn Place, sending 60 firefighters from 12 units to fight the blaze, which was brought under control at 11:54 a.m.

Damage was confined to one apartment at the building, according to the New York Fire Department. No injuries were reported.

Workers with the New York City Housing Authority helped haul burned pieces of furniture and broken windowpanes from the ruined apartment Monday afternoon.

Fire officials are investigating; however, the blaze is not considered to be suspicious.
