Fort Greene Woman Sues Cops Who Shot Her Dog During Raid

A Fort Greene woman is suing NYPD officers who she alleged shot her dog in the head for no reason during a raid of her apartment, the New York Daily News reports. 

Maryetta Thomas, 58, filed the suit in Brooklyn Federal Court in December, 2012. 

“They just invaded my house and shot my dog,” Thomas told The News. She noted she was so negatively affected by the incident that she moved out of her Fort Greene apartment, a place she called home for 37 years.

At approximately 9 a.m. on Sept. 21, 2011, police officers from the Brooklyn North Narcotics unit and the 88th Precinct performed a search warrant raid on Thomas' apartment on the suspicion of drugs and guns, The News said.

Thomas, a home health care aide who has arthritis and walks with a cane to get on the floor, was ordered to get on the floor, The News said. 

Her 24-year-old son, Teddious, was in another room when he heard a cop yell about their dog. "The dog never barked,” Teddious Thomas told The News. “He didn’t even aggressively growl.”

The dog, a pit bull named Dommo who was 10 months old at the time, was shot above his ear. “There was blood by his ear,” Maryetta Thomas told The News. 

Thomas and her sons were put in a police van, but cops stopped at a diner on DeKalb Ave. to get breakfast, she said. The three were charged with marijuana possession, violations which were dismissed before she ever saw a judge in criminal court, her lawyer Jason Leventhal, who described the evidence cops found as “residue,” told The News.

Dommo was taken to an animal hospital where the wound was cleaned, but the veterinarian was unable to remove the bullet lodged in his shoulder, The News said.

An NYPD spokesman did not respond to The News' questions about the shooting and the raid.
